Question 1

How do Calgary salary ranges for the most-recruited roles compare to national averages?

Accepted Answer

Calgary salaries for high-demand roles typically run 5 to 15 percent below Toronto and Vancouver averages, though energy sector positions often exceed national benchmarks. Software developers in Calgary earn approximately $85,000 to $120,000 compared to $95,000 to $135,000 in major Eastern markets. Accounting and finance roles track closer to national averages at $65,000 to $95,000 for intermediate positions. Operations and supply chain managers command $90,000 to $130,000, roughly aligned with national figures. The city's lower cost of living partially offsets nominal salary differences for out-of-province candidates.

Question 2

What types of roles do these Calgary recruiting agencies typically fill?

Accepted Answer

Calgary agencies on this ranking focus heavily on energy sector placements, including petroleum engineers, geoscientists, project managers and operations directors for oil and gas companies. You'll also find strong capabilities in finance and accounting roles like controllers, financial analysts and corporate accountants. Several maintain dedicated practices for executive search across C-suite and VP-level positions. Technology and IT hiring has grown substantially, covering software developers, systems architects and cybersecurity specialists. Professional services roles including legal, marketing and human resources round out typical placement categories.

Question 3

What questions should I ask a recruiter before signing a contract?

Accepted Answer

Ask about their fee structure—contingency fees typically run 20 to 25 percent of first-year salary while retained searches cost more but guarantee exclusivity. Clarify their replacement guarantee period if a hire doesn't work out, usually 30 to 90 days. Inquire about their candidate sourcing methods and whether they'll prioritize passive candidates beyond job board posts. Request their average time-to-fill for similar roles and ask how many clients they're currently serving to gauge bandwidth. Finally, confirm who owns the candidate relationships after placement and what happens if you want to rehire that person later.

Question 4

What's the difference between contingency and retained search?

Accepted Answer

Contingency recruiters earn a fee only when you hire their candidate, typically 15 to 25 percent of first-year compensation. You work with multiple firms simultaneously and pay nothing if none succeed. Retained search firms receive payment in installments regardless of outcome, usually one-third upfront, commanding 25 to 35 percent of total compensation. You engage one firm exclusively. Contingency suits high-volume or mid-level roles where speed matters. Retained search applies to executive positions, confidential searches or situations requiring deep market mapping and candidate assessment before presentation.

Question 5

When does retained search make sense?

Accepted Answer

Retained search works best for C-suite and VP-level roles where confidentiality matters and the talent pool is limited. You pay upfront fees—typically one-third of the total at signing—which ensures dedicated focus and deep market mapping. Consider it when you need exclusive representation, when filling the role incorrectly would be costly or when passive candidates require sophisticated outreach. Organizations hiring in competitive Calgary sectors like energy, engineering and financial services often use retained firms for senior technical leadership where specialized industry knowledge and established networks justify the investment structure.
