Question 1

How do Frankfort salary ranges for the most-recruited roles compare to national averages?

Accepted Answer

Frankfort salary ranges typically track 15-20% below national averages for most professional roles, reflecting Kentucky's lower cost of living and the city's mid-sized market dynamics. Administrative and healthcare support positions align more closely with national figures due to standardized state government pay scales. Specialized roles in finance and IT see wider gaps, often 20-25% below coastal markets but competitive within the regional Southeast corridor. Hiring managers should calibrate compensation expectations accordingly when partnering with local recruiters, as candidates typically prioritize stability and quality of life over peak salary numbers.

Question 2

What types of roles do these Frankfort recruiting agencies typically fill?

Accepted Answer

Frankfort's recruiting landscape reflects the capital city's employment mix, with agencies handling state government contractor placements, healthcare administrative roles and light industrial positions. Given the city's smaller market, most firms operate as generalists rather than vertical specialists, filling everything from accounting and human resources to manufacturing supervisors and office managers. The proximity to Lexington and Louisville means some agencies also place professional services roles including IT, engineering and executive positions that draw from the broader regional talent pool.

Question 3

What questions should I ask a recruiter before signing a contract?

Accepted Answer

Ask about fee structure—whether contingency (commonly 20 to 30 percent of first-year salary) or retained—and payment terms. Clarify the guarantee period if a candidate leaves or underperforms, typically 30 to 90 days. Confirm their candidate replacement policy and whether they'll conduct additional searches at no cost. Inquire about their average time-to-fill for your role type and how many candidates they'll present. Request references from clients who've hired for similar positions. Finally, understand exclusivity requirements and whether you can work with multiple firms simultaneously.

Question 4

What's the difference between contingency and retained search?

Accepted Answer

Contingency recruiters earn a fee only when you hire their candidate, typically 20 to 25 percent of first-year salary. You work with multiple agencies simultaneously and owe nothing if you fill the role internally or through another source. Retained search firms receive payment in phases regardless of outcome, usually one-third upfront, one-third at candidate presentation and one-third at placement. They work exclusively on your search and invest more time in research, assessment and market mapping. Retained arrangements suit executive and specialized technical roles where depth of evaluation matters most.

Question 5

If I apply through a recruiter in Frankfort, do I lose negotiating power on my offer?

Accepted Answer

Working with a recruiter typically strengthens your negotiating position rather than weakening it. Frankfort agencies handle salary discussions before you interview, ensuring the range meets your expectations upfront. They also negotiate on your behalf after the offer, leveraging their client relationships and knowledge of market rates. Because employers pay the recruiting fee—commonly 20 to 30 percent of first-year salary on contingency—you retain full control over compensation discussions. The recruiter's commission depends on placing you at the highest acceptable salary, aligning their incentives with yours.
